Biksu Buddha Jepang Kukai dikirim ke dinasti Tang di Tiongkok untuk belajar tentang budaya dan peradabannya. Dia menegaskan tekadnya untuk mempelajari segala sesuatu tentang Vajrayana, tetapi kemudian seekor kucing setan muncul dan menghancurkan kedamaian Kota Chang’an, menyebabkan serangkaian kejadian aneh (orang-orang kuat di ibu kota terus mati). Jadi Kukai bergabung tangan dengan penyair Bai Letian untuk menyelidiki kematian Selir Yang, dengan mengikuti thetrail yang ditinggalkan oleh kucing, mengungkapkan fakta yang terkubur.
